Beccarian Correctional Care has strategically deployed therapeutic living units (TLUs) and transitional services (TS) programs across various sentenced and remanded correctional settings in Alberta, each tailored to the unique needs of its member population.
This 22-bed women's unit is a valuable resource in the Alberta Model of recovery care as it provides much needed treatment for incarcerated women.
The therapeutic focus is centered on addressing trauma, emotional challenges, and family and relationship issues in an enriched and intensive group therapy environment. This environment prepares women to successfully re-enter society in addition to providing referral to a continuum of care and highly sought after occupational rehabilitation skills.
All men’s TLUs were developed with a focus on developing a strong sense of community in order to enhance recovery capital and foster social rehabilitation.
This includes a broad array of psychological therapies and a robust network of community partnerships to provide ongoing support in areas such as referral to ongoing care in one of Alberta’s therapeutic communities, housing, and continuing education.
This ensures that each individual has the resources they need to maintain their recovery journey in the community.

Calgary Correctional Centre capacity: 22-bed men's unit
In addition to the dedicated TLUs, Beccarian Correctional Care has also established transitional services programs at five remand centres, tailored to support non-sentenced populations:
TS offers several therapeutic components similar to those in TLUs at these sites which are specially adapted for individuals in remand settings. The programs aim to provide individualized support upon release, motivate inmates towards entering a TLU, and establish vital connections to substance use services, recovery-oriented housing, social services, and employment opportunities.
The transitional services model at these locations draws heavily from a modified Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model, ensuring that all inmates receive comprehensive, immediate, and effective support tailored to their specific needs and circumstances.
Across all locations, Beccarian Correctional Care’s TLUs and TS programs are designed to reduce recidivism, foster recovery, and facilitate successful reintegration into society.
Each facility's specific programs and initiatives are crafted with the goal of addressing the distinct challenges faced by its members, ensuring that our approach remains personalized, effective, and deeply rooted in the community's needs.
